Where interviews come from

The same job, applied for in different places, gets very different results.

Huntr, a job-search tracker, looked at 1,244,654 applications its users logged between October 2024 and July 2026, and counted how often each led to at least one interview.

Applications sent through an employer's own careers page led to an interview 6.87% of the time. Applications sent through job boards and aggregators, as a group, led to one 1.95% of the time.

Part of the gap is who applies where: people who find the careers page often know someone there or are better matched. Huntr's most recent quarter (April–June 2026) shows the same pattern: 6.42% on employer career sites against 3.82% on job boards.

What to do with this

  • Use job boards to find out who's hiring, then apply on the company's own careers page.
  • If a role isn't on the employer's site, don't apply through the board either. It may be closed or never have existed.
  • Tailor the resume to the posting, using only things you've actually done.

Check a posting before you apply

Paste a job link and we'll tell you whether it's live on the employer's own careers system, how long it's been open, and whether it shows scam signs. It's free.
